Turn your arm so you are looking at the underside of your forearm, then study the color of your veins to determine your skin tone. If the veins appear greenish you are considered to be in the warm category. If they are more blue you are considered cool.

Adjust your hair color if you have changed its natural hue or if you want a change. For the most flattering look, choose a color that is as close to the original as possible. If your skin is more warm, choose a hair colors that has a rich base, such as a dark golden brown, mahogany, auburn or chestnut. Conversely, intense red, brown or blond colors compliment cooler skin tones.

Stand in front of a mirror and hold clothing items next to your face to choose those that are most flattering. You will be able to determine whether they make your skin look washed out or give you a natural glow. Just like your hair, the color of your clothing can affect the appearance of your skin. If your coloring is warm, stick with colors such as ivory, bright orange or red. If it is more cool, stick with colors such as blue or pink.

Buy the right cosmetic foundation. Test a strip of color along your jawline and blend it in with a sponge. The foundation should blend in and enhance your natural coloring, not stand out or weigh it down. When choosing lipstick, blush or eyeshadow, consider what the base of the color is. Lipstick that are pink or reddish brown complement pale, cool tones. If you have a medium-toned complexion, use rose, fuchsia or peach. If you have darker skin, opt for deep browns and plums.

Tips & Warnings

  • A color wheel can help you choose the most complementary colors for your skin. If you are wearing an article of clothing in a color that is not flattering to you, pair it with a suitable hue and keep it away from your face to minimize its effect on your skin tone.
