How to Activate International Roaming

International or global roaming, gives your phone the ability to pick up networks when traveling in other countries, thereby allowing you to use your service over those networks. How and if you can activate international roaming will depend on your carrier. Your carrier will need to activate the service for you, or in some cases, may provide the ability for you to turn the feature on yourself through your online account. Keep in mind however, charges for international roaming are expensive, and you will want to verify those charges with your carrier before using the service.

  • Call your cellular service provider and inquire about activating international roaming as an option. Keep in mind, not all carriers offer international roaming and the service may be sporadic at best. Carriers must have agreements in place with the carriers overseas where you are traveling. Those carriers will send a bill to your cell phone company when you use the service, and in turn, your cell phone company will bill you.

  • Tell the representative you would like to activate international roaming, if offered as a service option. Usually, you will need to qualify for the service, meaning your credit must meet your carrier's specifications. If you do not have good credit overall or with your cell phone company directly, you likely will not qualify.

  • Follow the instructions provided by the representative to activate your international roaming feature. In some cases, you will not need to do anything; the carrier will simply activate the feature for you. In other instances, you may need to change settings on your phone or log into your account online to activate the feature. You may also need to send a text message to activate the feature. Procedures vary considerably among providers.

  • Ask the representative about the charges concerning international roaming. You will need to provide the countries you are traveling to in order for the representative to provide you with accurate quotes. In addition, you will need to ask about coverage in the countries you are traveling to.
