How to Disable the Windows Defender Warnings

Windows Defender is an anti-malware program, which comes with Windows Vista and Windows 7. However, many people find Windows Defender's additional threat warnings to be cumbersome and annoying and, therefore, choose to use other anti-malware software to protect their computer.

If you have chosen to use alternative antivirus software and would like to disable Windows Defender, follow these steps.

Instructions

    • 1

Open Windows Defender by clicking on the Start menu and choosing Windows Defender from the All Programs list. You can also launch the program by clicking on its icon from the Taskbar or by typing "Windows Defender" in the Start menu's search field.

    • 2

Click on the Tools icon (looks like a cog) at the top of the window. Under Settings, choose Options.

    • 3

On the left-hand menu of the Options window, select Administrator. Un-check the box that says, "Use this program." Click the "Save" button. Enter the administrator password, if prompted.

    • 4

To disable Windows Defender from operating in real time, choose Real-Time Protection from the Options menu. Un-check the box that says, "Use real-time protection (recommended)."

Tips & Warnings

  • Re-enable Windows Defender at any time by opening the program and checking the box next to "Use this program" in the Administrator window.

  • Even after the program has been disabled, you can manually scan your system using Windows Defender by clicking on the Scan icon at the top of the program window.

  • It is risky to run your computer without antivirus protection. Download up-to-date antivirus software before disabling Windows Defender.
