Find out the value of your EE bonds.

Calculating the value of your EE savings bond by hand presents difficulties, especially if you bought it between May 1997 and the end of April 2005. A bond purchased during this period pays a variable interest rate based on market conditions. EE bonds issued after May 2005 pay a fixed rate. Fortunately, the Treasury has put a calculator and software online to facilitate finding the value of your EE bond or bonds.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to the Treasury Direct Savings Bond Calculator on the Internet (see Resources) and choose "EE bonds" in the drop-down box.

    • 2

Enter the information for your bond. Select the dollar denomination. Then enter the serial number and the issue date. If you have multiple bonds, enter the information for all.

    • 3

Click the "Update" button to find the interest and current value of your bond or bonds.

    • 4

Save your savings bond inventory to make future calculations easier. Go to the "Inventory Instructions" link in Resources. Even if you have many bonds, you can calculate your interest and total values without having to enter all the information again.

    • 5

Use the Savings Bond Wizard if you want to add calculation software directly to your computer. Follow the link in Resources, and then click on "Download Savings Bonds Wizard IV," the current version as of September 2010. Click on "Update the Wizard" if you have a version from before May 2010. The Wizard will also enable you to track your bonds and calculate interest.

Tips & Warnings

  • You normally must pay federal income tax on EE bond interest, but you can exclude the interest from federal tax if you use the bonds for qualifying educational expenses.

  • If you redeem your EE bonds before five years, you must pay an interest penalty of the most recent three months' interest. You cannot redeem them before one year in any case.
