How to get more bass out of your headphones

Save

While having an expensive pair of headphones to get the most "bump for your buck" is great, not all of us have the money to spend on headphones that can range anywhere from $100 to $400. It's best to shop around and find the highest-rated headphones you can find for your budget. Once you pick a pair that's right for you, you can follow simple guidelines to get more bass on your headphones.

Things You'll Need

  • Headphones
  • MP3 Player
  • Computer
  • Change the EQ settings on your MP3 player to "Bass Booster" or "Bass Enhancer." Most MP3 players have these settings built in since a full customizable EQ is rarely an option.

  • Purchase a headphone amplifier. In the past, headphone amps were large and not portable. Today, they can be smaller than a miniature MP3 player. Headphone amps boost the power to your headphones. This means you can get the bass you want while still supporting the mids and highs.

  • Set up a pre-amp on your computer. Software pre-amps help boost the sound before getting to your audio-out port. This is an alternative to a headphone amp but it can lead to a bit of distortion if not configured properly. Some audio applications such as iTunes have pre-amps built in that you can enable.

Tips & Warnings

  • The iTunes pre-amp and EQ, when configured properly, can significantly enhance music. You can create custom presets, such as a "Hip-Hop Bass Booster," to help remember which settings you use for various genres.
  • Be careful not to amplify the audio too high. It can cause distortion and hardware damage to your headphones. It's safest to slowly raise the EQ until it sounds good but not distorted. Never raise an EQ or pre-amp further than the "distortion point."
