How to Fill Windshield Wiper Fluid

The windshield washer fluid tank is under the hood.

Refill your windshield washer fluid tank when a "Low Washer Fluid" light appears on the dash when you start your vehicle or if fluid fails to spray when you press the windshield washer lever. No tools are required and the process is within the capabilities of most car owners. Buy commercially prepared washer fluid, as it has components that clean better than water. If you buy concentrated washer fluid, follow the manufacturer's directions for use before filling your washer tank.

Instructions

    • 1

Open your car hood. Late-model cars usually have a lever or button under the dash of the car that releases the hood. Unlatch the hood and lift it open. Some models require propping with a metal rod connected to the hood or the side of the engine compartment.

    • 2

Locate the fluid tank. Most often it is a white plastic container, about 1 gallon in size, with a plastic snap-on lid. Look for the words, "washer fluid only," or the image of a windshield pressed into the lid or the tank itself.

    • 3

Pour the replacement fluid into the tank. Don't overfill. If the weather is warm, fill it to the top of the tank, but in cold weather leave it three-quarters full to allow for expansion.

    • 4

Replace the cap and close the hood of your car.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not mix water with your commercially prepared washer fluid. Dilution with water could allow it to freeze.

  • Do not use antifreeze, which is engine coolant, in the washer tank. It will damage the washer system.
