How to Use Inkjet Photo Paper

If you would like to be able to print your digital photos at home, you should invest in a photo-quality printer and inkjet photo paper. While you can print a photo onto inkjet photo paper with any standard inkjet printer, the printed photos will lack the quality of a professional print job. If you print on inkjet photo paper in an inkjet photo printer, however, your images come out comparable to professional printing.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the bypass tray on the inkjet photo printer if your photo printer has one. The bypass tray is a separate section where you can place one sheet of inkjet photo paper at a time separate from the paper in your paper tray. If your printer does not have a bypass tray, remove the paper from the main paper tray and place one sheet of photo paper into the paper tray.

Click the “Print” button in the toolbar of the program from which you want to print the photo. You can generally print a photo from any picture program in which you can view or edit the file. Make sure you don’t click “Quick Print,” which doesn’t allow you to change the print settings.

    • 3

Pull down the menu next to the “Media Type” to view the paper types. If “Media Type” doesn’t appear on the main screen of the “Print” wizard, click the “Properties” button and then click the menu by “Media Type.” Select the type of inkjet photo paper that you have in the printer, such as “Glossy Photo Paper” or “Matte Photo Paper.” The type of photo paper should be listed on the paper’s packaging.

    • 4

Choose the highest available quality in the “Print Quality” section to print the most high-quality photo and click the “Print” button. If you used the bypass tray on your photo printer for your inkjet photo paper, the printer automatically recognizes that the tray is in use and prints to the bypass tray. If you used the standard paper tray, the printer pulls the inkjet photo paper through just like a standard sheet of paper and prints the photo to the inkjet paper.

Tips & Warnings

  • Aside from a higher-quality print job, a photo printer can create prints without borders, unlike most standard inkjet printers.
