How to Set Up the Linksys Router for Remote Access

How to Set Up the Linksys Router for Remote Access thumbnail
Remote access allows you to monitor router traffic.

A Linksys wireless router enables you to connect many computers to your network using Wi-Fi. For a network administrator, this means less "tethering" computers via Ethernet cables and more setting up wireless connections. It also means less knowledge of how much traffic is being routed through your bandwidth. Turning on and setting up Linksys remote access improves a network administrator's ability to see how the traffic on the wireless network is affecting bandwidth.

Instructions

    • 1

Click on "Start" and then "Run" on the computer you want to use for remote monitoring. Type "ipconfig" into the "Run" box and press "Enter." Record the number next to "Physical Address." This is the MAC address for your computer. If you plan on using more than one computer to access the router, complete this process on each computer.

    • 2

Load the router settings onto the computer by entering the IP address "192.168.0.1" into a web browser. Input the login credentials. The default username and password is "admin." If admin fails to work, visit the Router Passwords website for a complete list of router login credentials (see Resources).

    • 3

Click on "Access Restrictions" to load the settings for remote access.

    • 4

Click on the "Enable" radio button next to "Status." This enables the remote access service.

    • 5

Click on "Edit Lists of PCs" and enter the MAC address of your computer(s) starting with MAC 01. Click on "Save Settings" to exit back to the main router setting page.

    • 6

Click on the radio button next to "Allow." This enables the computer(s) you listed as authorized during specific time frames.

    • 7

Place a check next to the boxes for each day you want to allow remote access. If you want access seven days a week, select "Everyday."

    • 8

Place a check next to "24 Hours" to allow access at any time of day. If you want to restrict the time frame, click the radio button next to "From" and enter in the time frame.

    • 9

Click on "Save Settings" to update the router.
