How to Delete a Photoshop Channel Without Affecting the Image

How to Delete a Photoshop Channel Without Affecting the Image thumbnail
Deleting an alpha channel in Photoshop will only remove a selection.

Adobe Photoshop channels make up part of an image, each storing different types of information. Channels are grayscale images that can affect an image if removed. For instance, there are color information channels which are automatically created when a new file is opened in Photoshop. Each channel contains the information for a different color in the image (for example, Red, Green and Blue in an RGB image). Alpha channels, on the other hand, are grayscale images that store selections or masked parts of an image. You might remove these selections when you no longer need them.

Instructions

    • 1

Open an unflattened image in Adobe Photoshop.

    • 2

Click the "Channels" palette to bring it in to view. If you don't see it on the screen, click the "Window" menu, then select "Channels."

    • 3

Select an alpha channel (not a color channel) displaying a selection you've made. Click the eye icon next to it to hide it. Hiding the channel doesn't delete it, but shows how the image is affected when the channel is gone. If you no longer need the channel, you can delete.

    • 4

Select the channel you want to delete, after confirming that it won't affect your image.

    • 5

Click the "Delete" icon (trash can) in the bottom-right corner of the "Channels" palette. Click "Yes" to confirm the deletion.

    • 6

Click the "File" menu, then "Save" to save the image.
