How to Unlock Mario & Luigi in "Super Mario 64" for the DS
"Super Mario 64" for the Nintendo DS was released in 2004, but the game itself is a remake of the Nintendo 64 classic of the same name from 1996. A key difference is the player controlled Mario throughout the entire game in the original. In the Nintendo DS version, players start as Yoshi, and must find keys that unlock other playable characters, including Mario and Luigi.

Complete enough objectives in the worlds available to obtain eight stars. Enter the rec room in the castle. Unlock the eight star door and go through it.

Jump into the picture of Mario on the wall to be taken to a new level. Slide down the ramp and stay on the left path. Navigate to the rising log platforms and cross them until you get to the tall log platform with a vine in the center. The vine is guarded by a piranha plant and lakitu.

Climb up the vine and cross the bridge from the donut shaped platform at the top. Sneak past the sleeping piranha plant and jump up some more log platforms until you reach the highest point. Drop down the central hole.

Run in the opposite direction to the Goomboss and get behind him. Swallow one of the minions following him, which will turn the minion into an egg.

Launch the egg at the Goomboss and hit him. Repeat this two more times to defeat him and obtain the key to Mario's door.

Go to the foyer outside of the rec room with the character doors along the wall. Unlock the door with the red "M" above it to play as Mario.
Luigi

Enter the level "Big Boo's Haunt" (course 5) as Mario and access the second floor of the mansion in the lobby. Go through the last door on the right.

Run past the bookshelf to the small piece of raised flooring underneath a red box. Wall kick or triple jump up to the hidden platform above and go through the door to the attic.

Jump into the portrait of Luigi. Take the door on the east in the first room, then the north door, then the east door, then the north door again. When you reach the long hall, run over the falling bridge and jump up the three checkered platforms. Drop down the hole at the top.

Approach the mirror and Big Boo will appear. Run behind Big Boo and execute a diving attack to injure him. Do this three times to defeat him and receive the key to Luigi's door.

Go to the foyer outside the rec room and unlock the door with the green "L" above it to unlock Luigi.

Tips & Warnings
Goomboss will run a lot faster after the second hit. Outrun him by moving around the inside lane of the circle.
Big Boo will disappear at times but can be seen in the reflection of the wall length mirror. Use his shadow in the room to help determine where he is.
Don't step into the middle of the ring during the Goomboss fight. It is filled with poisonous fog.
