How to Size Breeches
Breeches are pants worn by equestrians while riding horses. Snug in fit, the legs on breeches end just below the knee and are tucked into riding boots. Breeches create a very distinct and put-together look that is traditional in the equestrian practice. Breeches for normal riders come in muted colors and sturdy cotton or polyester fabrics. Breeches for jockeys come in bright colors and satiny fabrics distinct to a jockey costume. If your rider is unavailable to try on her breeches, size them for her to ensure a good fit.

1
Measure the rider's true waist. Find the true waist by having the rider place the butt of one hand on the bottom of her rib cage. Where her fingertips end is where the true waist is. Since breeches are supposed to sit on the true waist--which is different from many styles of normal pants--you must measure this exactly. Note the measurement in inches.

2
Measure the rider's inseam. Breeches are supposed to end just below the knee so they can be tucked into riding boots. Measure from crotch to below the knee to ensure that the breeches you select fit comfortably and do not ride up. Note the measurement.

3
Measure the circumference of the rider's thigh and calf. Since breeches are tapered pants, the fit will be different at the top of the leg from the fit below the knee. To ensure the breeches are snug, not tight, accurately measure both the thigh and calf. Note the measurements.

Compare the measurements you've collected to the breeches you're considering purchasing to find a pair that will perfectly fit your rider. If the breeches are handmade and not from a manufacturer, you may have to physically measure the waist, inseam and legs of the garment. Most breeches have the measurements on a tag inside the garment.

Tips & Warnings
Breeches may be worn as a part of a historical costume and for fashion purposes.
The best way to get a good fit on breeches is to have the rider try them on before purchase. If your rider is unavailable to try on the breeches or you're ordering online, ask for a return guarantee should the breeches not fit well.
