How to View Chkdsk Report

The chkdsk tool, run from the command line with a set of arguments, analyzes a hard disk for errors. Depending on the parameters you enter at the time the tool is run, it may simply analyze or it may also repair, recover and clean the disk. If you've run chkdsk, though, you know the result output feeds to the command prompt so quickly that it's difficult to read, let alone review and interpret. The good news is that chkdsk also outputs its results to a report you can view through the Event Viewer.

Instructions

    • 1

      Click "Start."

    • 2

Type ""Event Viewer" in the search field. The Application window appears.

    • 3

Sort the list by event ID by clicking the "Event ID" tab to sort numerically from ascending to descending.

    • 4

Locate event ID 1001 that also has a source of "Winnit" or "Winlogon" and the correct chkdsk run date, and select it.

    • 5

Look on the "General" tab in the lower frame to view the results.

Tips & Warnings

  • Rerun chkdsk with additional parameters if desired. The results will again output to the Event Viewer.
