Learning how to set up your Seagull can save you lots of money.

Seagull, based in Quebec, Canada, has been making acoustic guitars since 1982 when founder Robert Godin and some friends began experimenting with the company's first hand-crafted instruments. As an owner of a Seagull acoustic guitar, you can save money by learning how to set up your instrument, a task that can cost more than $100 if done by a professional.

Instructions

  1. Straighten the Truss Rod

    • 1

Straighten the truss rod if your neck has a bow.

    • 2

Insert the hex key into the truss hole, which is located toward the neck inside of the sound hole.

    • 3

Turn the hex key to the left if the arc of the neck is facing up, using subtle turns until the neck is straightened.

    • 4

Turn the hex key to the right if the arc of the neck is facing down. Turn until it is straight as you want or is in the flat, no-tension position.

    String the Guitar

    • 5

Restring your Seagull guitar starting with your low E string. Remove the white pegs from the bridge of the guitar. If stuck, use a pair of pliers to remove them.

    • 6

Put on the low E string. Insert the ball end into the empty peg hole. Put the peg tightly back into the hole, making sure the ball of the string is caught at the bottom of the peg inside the hole.

    • 7

Insert the other end of the string into the tuning machine on the head stock of the guitar. Leave some slack on the string so it can wrap around the tuner post several times. Turn the tuner right to tighten the string, using your finger or a string winder, until the string is in tune.

    • 8

Repeat steps 1 to 3 with the remaining strings, tuning each as you tighten them.

    • 9

Cut the excess wire on the head stock once all the strings are securely on the instrument.

    • 10

Stretch each string by pulling it up gently. Pulling too hard will snap off some of the higher strings. Re-tune each string after stretching it.
