How to Split Files Using WinRAR

WinRAR is a file archiving and extracting utility that creates archives in the RAR format, which is a proprietary file archive format similar to zip. WinRAR can create split archives from large files, where every file is a predefined size. Splitting a RAR file creates a variety of files of the specified maximum size with the file extensions ".001," ".002" and so on. Users can send large files in small pieces by email, on USB flash drives or CDs. Once all the split pieces are in the same directory, a user can extract the original file from the split RAR files.

Instructions

1. Click "Commands" and "Add Files To an Archive" in the WinRAR window.

2. Type a name for the archive in the "Archive Name" box.

3. Click "RAR" under "Archive Format."

4. Click the arrow at the right side of the "Split to Volumes, Bytes" box and click a pre-defined maximum file size or type your own file size in bytes into the box.

5. Click the "Files" tab.

6. Click the "Append" box under "Files to Add."

7. Browse to the files you want to split and double-click them.

8. Click "OK."
