Routers have 65,535 available ports to use. When setting up software or devices to connect through a Netgear router to the Internet, you must assign the specific ports via the router. The process of assigning these ports is known as port forwarding. The router forwards information that comes from the ports through its built-in firewall, which then either goes to or comes from the Internet, depending on setup.

Things You'll Need

  • IP address of computer or device to forward ports to
  • PC connected to router

Click "Add" on either the inbound or outbound rule section, depending on whether you need the program to send or receive data (refer to your program's user guide to determine which to do).

    • 5

Enter your computer's IP address in the "Send to LAN Server" setting, then set the "log" setting to "On." Click "Apply" to save your rule.

Enter a name for your service in the site that appears. Select "Both" in the service type field, unless you know to do otherwise.

    • 8

Enter the lowest and highest ports for your program or device in the prompts. Check your program or device's manual for the specific ports to forward, then click "Apply."

  • You may need to repeat these steps several times if the program or device requires multiple inbound or outbound ports.
