How do I Convert a Sink Base Drawer Into Storage?

Converting the false drawer of a sink cabinet into usable storage is a simple way to create more space in a kitchen or bathroom. Small items always seem to be in the way, cluttering up counter space, or getting lost in larger drawers. Changing the false front into a tip-out drawer creates the perfect space for items such as nail clippers, tweezers, citrus peelers and much more. Utilize a few ordinary tools and inserts found at most home improvement stores to add some additional space and organization to cabinetry.

Things You'll Need

  • Pliers
  • Screwdriver
  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil
  • Tip-out tray
  • Hinges
  • Remove the false drawer fronts carefully to avoid damage. Some fronts are held in place with screws where others are attached with long staples. Use a screwdriver or pliers to remove the fasteners.

  • Measure the false front with a measuring tape in order to purchase the correct size tip-out trays and hinges.

  • Mark the hinge placement on the cabinet and false front with measuring tape and pencil. Some kits will come with a template to make this step easier.

  • Install the hinges on both sides of the cabinet opening using the screwdriver. There are different types of hinges used by different manufactures. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for correct placement.

  • Attach the drawer fronts to the hinges, carefully avoiding scratching or marking the finish.

  • Install the trays by attaching them to the hinges and drawer fronts according to the manufacturer's instructions.
