How to Put Facebook Chat on the Firefox Sidebar

Maintain contact with your circle of friends using Facebook Chat in Firefox.

Putting Facebook Chat in your Mozilla Firefox browser is a great way to stay in touch with friends and family, while you are away from the Facebook website but still browsing the Internet. Easily talk with your friends and continue doing research, looking for sports scores or checking the news of the day on your favorite news site. Keeping Facebook Chat open in your Mozilla Firefox sidebar is also a great way to catch those friends who are only on the Facebook Chat for a short time.

Instructions

Put Facebook Chat on Sidebar

1. Open Mozilla Firefox and click "Ctrl+Shift+B" on your keyboard. The Mozilla Firefox Library window will appear on your screen.

2. Click the expansion box to the left of "All Bookmarks" and then click "Bookmarks Toolbar" on the left side of the Mozilla Firefox Library window.

3. Click "Organize" at the top of the Mozilla Firefox Library window and then click "New Bookmark."

4. Type "Facebook Chat" in the blank field to the right of "Name."

5. Type "http://www.facebook.com/presence/popout.php" in the blank field to the right of "Location."

6. Check the blank box to the left of "Load this bookmark in the sidebar."

7. Click "Add." The Facebook Chat program will now be added to your Mozilla Firefox Bookmarks toolbar, by default located just below the Address bar in your Mozilla Firefox browser.

8. Click the "Facebook Chat" icon on the Bookmarks toolbar on your Mozilla Firefox browser to run the Facebook Chat program in a sidebar. You will have to click "Facebook Chat" in each new Mozilla Firefox browsing session to place the program on the sidebar. To adjust the size of the Facebook Chat window, hold your cursor over the right edge of the program and hold your left-mouse button down. Drag the edge of the Facebook Chat window to the right until all of your chat window is viewable.

Remove Facebook Chat from Sidebar

1. Follow Steps 1 and 2 in Section 1.

2. Right-click "Facebook Chat" in the list of programs on the right side of the Mozilla Firefox Library window.

3. Click "Delete." The Facebook Chat program will be removed from the Bookmarks toolbar and will no longer be available to be placed in the Mozilla Firefox sidebar, unless you repeat the process in Section 1 to re-add the program.

Tips & Warnings

• If you get tired of people contacting you through the Facebook Chat program while it is on your Mozilla Firefox sidebar, close the Facebook Chat program or change the settings in the Facebook Chat program so that certain people cannot see you when you are online.
