Fast broadband has revolutionized the way we access information and consume all kinds of media. It's now possible to download a song or a full-length feature film in a speed that would have seemed fanciful just a few years ago. Despite advances in the time it takes and availability, slow downloads remain, for many, a frustrating process. There are a number of steps you can take to ensure that your files are downloaded to your hard drive as fast as possible.

Instructions

    • 1

Change your internet service provider (ISP). There are a number of online tools which allow you to check the true speed of your internet connection. It often turns out to be considerably less than claimed by your ISP. If you are out of contract, shop around for a provider that offers a genuinely fast service. There are number of sources of independent research available regarding the true average speed delivered by different ISPs. It's always faster to use cable access than having your connection delivered down a phone line.

Check your modem/router. Make sure that your modem/router is correctly configured. Check connections by consulting the instruction manual. If your using an ethernet cable, make sure it's not too long as this can impact speed. If you're using a wireless connection, make sure you're receiving a strong signal and that your modem/router is transmitting properly.

Stay within your allowance. Some ISPs will limit the amount of data you can download in any given period relative to your package and restrict your speed if you exceed it. Stay within your allowance or contact your ISP to extend it.

    • 4

Download at the right time of day. Some ISPs restrict or "strangle" your speed at times of heavy internet usage. Try to download off peak; either very late at night or early in the morning.

    • 5

Close down other programs. Shut any other web browsers or programs to ensure that your download is prioritized. Make sure you are not uploading anything at the same time as downloading as this can consume a large amount of bandwidth.

Tips & Warnings

  • Close down programs in your system tray which may be connected to your internet connection as these can slow the progress of your download.

  • Never disable or close your antivirus software in an attempt to speed up your download.
