How to Share Between Mac Computers

With multiple Macintosh computers on your home network, your files and folders can get scattered pretty easily. Configuring the computers for file sharing over your home network will allow you to easily access and transfer files among the computers. Mac OS X includes a "Sharing" preference pane that makes setting up file sharing simple.

Instructions

    • 1

Open "System Preferences" via the Apple menu.

    • 2

Select "Sharing." Place a check mark next to "File Sharing" in the "Services" list to turn on the feature.

    • 3

Click "Options..." Select "Share files and folders using AFP." Click "Done."

    • 4

Set the folders you wish to share with the other Mac computers on your network by clicking "+" within the "Share Folders" list. Select the folder and click "Add." Repeat for additional folders, as desired. You can optionally adjust the users and read/write permissions for each individual shared folder.

    • 5

Repeat the steps on the other Macintosh computers.

    • 6

Access the shared files and folder by selecting "Go > Network" from the Finder's menu bar. The shared Macs will be listed within "Network." Double-click the listed computer(s) to access the shared files and folders.
