How to Check Itouch Generation

Determine your iPod Touch's generation by locating its model number.

If you're unsure of your iPod Touch's generation, you have two options of finding out: by reading the device's model number on the back cover or by accessing your iPod Touch's General settings. The generation of an iPod Touch refers to the model and determines what features are available on the device, as the second and third generation of the iPod Touch includes support for the iOS 4 firmware update, according to the official Apple site.

Instructions

1. Flip the iPod Touch over, and read the model number near the bottom of the iPod Touch. According to the Apple, the iPod Touch 2G has the A1288 model number and the iPod Touch 3G has the A1318 model number.

2. Press the "Home" button and unlock the iPod Touch's screen by sliding your finger across the screen.

3. Touch the "Settings" icon on the iPod Touch's home screen and touch the "General" tab.

4. Touch the "About" tab on the screen, and locate the generation in the "Model" section.
