How do I Measure The Radius of a Hinge?

Save

The radius of a hinge refers to the radius of the rounded corner of a radius corner hinge. The "radius" refers to the radius of a circle; if a circle with a radius of 1/4 in. were drawn on a piece of paper and a hinge with a 1/4 in. radius were laid over the circle, the curved edge of the corner of the flat hinge plate would follow the curve of the circle exactly.

Things You'll Need

  • Paper
  • Pencil
  • Ruler
  • U.S. quarter
  • U.S. dime
  • Lay the open hinge on a sheet of paper.

  • Trace around one corner of one of the flat hinge plates. Mark the point at which the top line of the tracing begins to curve downward toward the side line of the tracing.

  • Lay a ruler on the top line of the tracing of the hinge plate and extend the top line past the side line of the tracing. Lay the ruler on the side line of the hinge plate and extend the side line upward past the top line of the tracing.

  • Measure the distance along the extension of the tracing's top line, between the point where the top line of the tracing begins its downward curve and the point where the extension of the tracing's side line intersects the extension of its top line. The answer will usually be either 1/4 in. or 5/8 in. This is the radius of the radius corner hinge.
