How to Turn Off Indexing in Windows Vista 64 Bit

Windows Vista 64-bit (as well as 32-bit) has a featured known as search indexing. This feature takes a snapshot of your files and allows you to find them easily. Some users prefer to disable the search-indexing feature to improve performance. According to PC Stats, turning off the search-index feature is one of the top "Windows Vista performance boosters." Disabling search indexing will slow down your searches, but it may improve the speed of your other PC operations. The process is the same in all versions of Windows Vista.

      Click the Windows Vista start menu, and then click the search box at the bottom.

      Type "Services" into the search box. When "Services" appears in the search results, click it. Click "Continue" to open the Microsoft Management Console.

      Scroll down in the services window. Find "Windows Search" at the bottom. Right-click it.

      Select "Properties" to open the options box. Look under "Search Indexer.exe." You should see "Automatic."
