How to Check NIC Card Settings

How to Check NIC Card Settings thumbnail
NIC cards use PCI slots on desktop computers.

Connecting a computer to the Internet involves complicated hardware components and services, including the network interface card (NIC), commonly called an "Ethernet" card. The NIC is the port through which PCs connect to modems, routers and switches to gain access to Internet service. The Ethernet card is essentially a simple computing device for the sole purpose of connecting to a network. Similar to troubleshooting tools for the operating system, Microsoft has included supplementary tools in Windows 7 that check NIC settings and offer solutions to problems.

Instructions

    • 1

Click on the Windows orb logo at the bottom of the desktop to show the Start menu. Click on the "Control Panel" from the menu to open a window.

    • 2

Type "troubleshooter" in the search box in the top right corner of the window. Click on the "Troubleshooting" link when it shows in the results in the center of the window.

    • 3

Click on the "View all" option. Click on "Network Adapter."

    • 4

Wait while the Windows operating system checks the settings on the NIC. Respond to questions if prompted and follow the instructions if presented with a fix or solution.
