How to Convert a Microsoft Access Database
Things change. This axiom especially applies to computer software. Each version of software comes with new features and improved functionality, but upgrading software persists as a hassle. To maximize the utility of an older Microsoft Access database file, a user must convert the file to a new compatible format. It can be done in a few easy steps.

Open the Microsoft Access 2010 program. On the "File" tab, select "Open" to open a dialogue box. Select an older-version Access database file to convert.

Convert Access database files to maximize functionality. Click "Save & Publish" under the "File" tab. Select "Access Database" (.accdb) under "Database File Types."

Select "Save As" and designate a new file name and location. Choose "Save."

Tips & Warnings
Convert Access database files from an older to a newer version to allow full editing of all objects.
Under certain conditions, an Access database file can be converted back to a previous version of Access.
Unless all intended users have upgraded to Access 2010, do not convert the database file format. Converting a file limits the functionality of users with older versions of Access software.
Each time an older-format Access database file opens in a different version, the file size increases.
