If you have issues with a dry, itchy scalp, or are plagued by constant, light dandruff, you may find it beneficial to treat your scalp with an exfoliating scalp rub. Done weekly, exfoliating scalp rubs will moisturize your scalp and remove dry skin. Exfoliating scalp rubs can be easily made at home, so pick a recipe that best suits your needs.

Things You'll Need

  • Olive oil
  • Jojoba oil
  • Coconut oil
  • Sugar
  • Brown sugar
  • Essential oils

Easy Scalp Rub

Mix 2 tbsp. each of olive oil and sugar.

Stir the mixture until it forms a paste. Add more sugar if necessary.

Wet your hair in the shower normally and apply the mixture to your scalp.

Work the mixture into your scalp with soft, slow circles for about five minutes.

Shampoo and condition your hair as usual.

Moisturizing Scalp Rub

Mix 1 tbsp. each of coconut oil and jojoba oil in a small bowl.

Add 2 tbsp. of brown sugar.

Add 5 to 10 drops of your favorite essential oil to the mixture. Use lavender to sooth your senses and create a relaxing effect.

Wet your hair and rub the mixture into your scalp lightly for five minutes.

Rinse your hair and wash it as usual

Invigorating Scalp Rub

Mix 2 tbsp. jojoba with 2 tbsp. brown sugar in a small bowl.

Add 3 drops each of cypress essential oil and peppermint essential oil.

Mix the ingredients until smooth and pasty

Apply the mixture to your scalp, and rub it in soft, circular motions for five minutes.

Rinse the mixture out of your hair, and shampoo and condition as usual.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be sure to wash the scrub thoroughly from your hair, as the oils will leave your scalp looking dirty.
  • Do not heat any of the scalp rubs before use. This will cause the sugar to melt and the rub to lose its exfoliating ability.
