Instructions

  1. Opening a brokerage account

    • 1

Open any type of Wells Fargo Advisors brokerage account--including IRAs or standard brokerage accounts. Write down the account number. Go to Wachovia.com to enroll the account online, which allows for Internet-based stock and bond trades with lower commissions than full-service brokers offer.

    • 2

Under "Online Services" near the middle of the page, click on "Online Brokerage." Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on "Enroll an Account Online." Add a user ID and password if you don't already have one, and provide the information about your account. Online trading will be quickly available.

    • 3

Start a new account at Wachovia.com if you don't already have a brokerage account with Wells Fargo Advisors. Click on "Investing" and then choose from an array of options including IRAs, brokerage accounts (full-service and self-directed) and more. Or on the right side of the screen click "All Application Forms" to get started. See Resources for links on how to get started.

    • 4

Complete the brokerage account application form, which will ask you for information including date of birth, full name, address, Social Security number, net worth and experience with investing. You'll also need to decide what type of account you wish to open -- individual or joint tenant. The form will also ask you about your investment goals. The application is typically about four pages and takes about 15 minutes to fill out.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be sure to have all your brokerage and bank account information in front of you before you start.

  • First consider whether you want to enroll in a full-service brokerage account (which offers more help but higher commissions) or want to do it on your own.

  • People who wish to trade online should be aware of the risks. This means making sure you have a secure Internet connection, never giving away account information to people you don't know and making sure you have a basic understanding of investing before setting out on your own.
