How to Test a Firewire Cable
Firewire cables are used to connect devices, such as video cameras, to a computer system. This includes an Apple computer and a PC running Microsoft Windows. When the connection to the computer, from the camera, is not working as expected you will need to test the Firewire cable. This able to be done in the Device Manager on a Windows PC and in the Apple Menu on an Apple computer.

Disconnect the Firewire cable and then restart the computer. Wait for the operating system to load and then plug the Firewire cable back into the computer.

Click the Start button and then select the option for the "Control Panel". Click on the option for "System and Maintenance." Click the option for Device Manager to open the window.

Click the "+" button that is next to "Other Devices" to expand the section.

Right-click on the option for IEEE 1394 Bus host controllers. Select the "Properties" option from the context menu to open the Properties window. A "This device is working properly" message should be displayed under the "Device status" section.

Turn on your Mac and then connect the camera's USB cable into the Firewire port on the computer.

Click the Apple icon which is located in the upper left corner of the screen. This will display the contents of the Apple Menu.

Select the option for "About this Mac." Click the option for "More Info" to display the System Profiler window. Select the option for "Devices and Volumes."

Click the disclosure triangle that is located in the Firewire Information area to see information about the camera. If information about the camera is displayed, the cable is working correctly.

Tips & Warnings
Use a different Firewire cable if you are having problems connecting a camera or other device to the computer.
