Things You'll Need:
- Vinegar
- Vinegar
- Mild Soap Such As Dishwashing Liquid
-
Step 1
Take down your curtains and inspect the back side of the fabric for signs of sun-rotting by stretching and feeling. If the curtains are sun-rotted, don't bother cleaning them. Shop for new curtains instead.
-
Step 2
Wash unlined curtains according to the instructions provided on the label.
-
Step 3
Have lined curtains professionally dry-cleaned to prevent possibly ruining them.
-
Step 4
Wash large curtains in your bathtub to prevent possible damage to your washing machine.
-
Step 5
Boil rusty curtain rings in vinegar to rediscover their shine. Rub soap on old curtain rods to make them run smoothly again.
-
Step 6
Toss your curtains into a dryer for a quick job. Add fabric softener to an air-dry setting and you've got fresh-smelling curtains in half an hour.

on 1/5/2009 great tip on the curtain rings, I need to try that. Also try using Dryel (home dry cleaning you use in your dryer) to clean dry-clean only curtains. I always use this for my dry-clean only curtains, and they come out great and smell good too!

on 11/22/2005 Machine-wash curtains according to care instructions. Instead of drying (and wasting gas and/or energy) just hang curtains back on the rod to dry. Result: no wrinkles.
