How do I Set a Flamenco Dancer's Hair & Comb? thumbnail
Flamenco dancer

Classic flamenco hairstyles allow the dancer to wear her hair long and loose. There are times, however, when a flamenco dancer will put up her hair and use a single rose, a decorative hair comb alone, or the comb and a small grouping of flowers. To set a flamenco dancer's hair and comb, you'll need only a few hair supplies and practice finding the right setting that secures the comb even when dancing. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Brush
  • Hair band
  • Hair comb, with or without fake flowers
  • Bobby pins

Instructions

    • 1

Brush out your hair completely to remove any tangles and to make it smooth. Form a ponytail by bringing together the top half of the hair, only the sides, just one side of the top half of hair or all of the hair.

    • 2

Secure the ponytail with a hair band tight enough that the ponytail will not slip, without making it uncomfortable. Adjust this secured portion into a braid or bun, or leave as is with some or all of the hair hanging loose.

    • 3

Place the hair comb by slipping the teeth of the comb through the upswept back hair. Position the hair comb above the point of the hair band to help keep it from slipping.

    • 4

Shake your head back and forth to test the sturdiness of the hair comb's position. Add bobby pins as needed to anchor the comb to your head. Repeat shaking your head until the comb doesn't shift.

    • 5

Practice a few dance moves and turns to ensure the hair comb is secured. Continue to make adjustments as needed until the comb stays in place through dancing.

Tips & Warnings

  • For multiple flamenco competitions, make sure you can replace your hair comb in the exact way it is the first time.

  • Only use hair combs if you are sure you can secure the comb so it doesn't fall out during your dance and become a hazard.
