How Do I Know If My Dodge RAM Has Overload Springs?
Overload springs allow you to put more cargo in your truck bed or more weight on your trailer hitch. Determining if your Dodge Ram pickup truck has overload springs can be accomplished very quickly by looking at the rear of the vehicle. Overload springs are only installed on the rear springs. Overload springs are an option on the heavy-duty model Dodge Rams and can also be purchased as an aftermarket accessory. They mount to the stock leaf springs and limit the compression of the stock springs when weight is added to the truck.

1
Loosen the lug nuts from one rear tire using a lug nut wrench.
-
2
Place the hydraulic jack directly under the rear axle. Lift your Dodge Ram using the hydraulic jack, high enough to easily remove the tire.
-
-
3
Remove the lug nuts, and pull the tire off the hub.

Look at the rear leaf springs. They are located on the top of the rear axle, near the tire. Leaf springs are long, slender pieces of metal hooked together and held to the axle by u-bolts. Leaf springs connect to the frame of the vehicle. Most Dodge Ram pickups have five leaf springs attached together.

Look at the top of the stock leaf springs for an additional mounting block and additional springs on top of the stock leaf springs. The mounting block is a square piece of metal that sits on top of the leaf spring pack. Its size will differ depending on which model of Dodge Ram you own. The overload springs mount on top of the mounting block. The overload springs look similar to the stock leaf springs. If you can see the additional mounting block and leaf springs on top of the stock leaf springs, you have overload springs.
