How to Assign a Key to a Mouse Scroll Button
The more buttons a mouse has, the more options you have to assign different actions to each button. By doing this, you don't have to use the keyboard for any number of commands. Most commonly, people use these buttons to save themselves from hitting the backspace button--or going from one web page back to the last one they were on. Similarly, they may assign a button to go forward to the next page. There is no limit to what you can assign your mouse to do, as long as you know how to do it.
Instructions
-
Using Windows Control Panel
-
1
Click "Start" in the bottom left corner of the toolbar, and select "Control Panel." Depending on your operating system, you may not see the word "Start"; it may just be a Windows logo, but it takes you to the same menu.
-
2
Select the mouse icon by double-clicking. If you use Vista or 7, look under "Hardware and Sound," and click the word "Mouse." Both of these options will take you to the same place. A "Mouse Properties" window will pop up.
-
-
3
Choose the "Buttons" tab, and you will see a diagram of the buttons available on your mouse. You can now assign the button you want to the key you want. Most times, you will see a drop-down list next to the button you click on. You can choose from the default options or select your own key to assign. Click "Apply" and "OK" to finish, and exit mouse properties.
With Mouse Software
-
4
Open the software program that came with your mouse. You probably installed this when you got the mouse. Most times, this software is listed under the brand of the mouse you purchased.
-
5
Click the "Buttons" tab to see a diagram of the mouse you have. You will be able to assign buttons to keys and other commands from this window.
-
6
Select "Apply" and "OK" at the bottom of the window to finish the changes you assigned. You must select "Apply" if the option is there; otherwise, the changes won't take, and you will have to repeat the process.
