Edit the Group Policy settings on your Windows XP Home computer.

The Group Policy settings on your computer control what users can and cannot do in the operating system. By editing the Group Policy on your operating system you can define the rules that must be followed in each user account. Windows XP Home does not include the application that is used to edit the group policy settings, unlike other versions of Windows. In order to edit the group policy settings, you will need to download a free program that will give you the ability to configure the settings.

Instructions

    • 1

Download the Windows XP Security Console application. Go to the Doug Knox website (See Reference 2), and click "Windows XP Security Console" at the top-left corner of the web page. The software will automatically download to your desktop.

    • 2

Double-click the downloaded file. The file is the ZIP format, double-clicking it will open a dialog window. Click the "Browse" button and choose the location you want to extract the file to in your hard drive. Click "Ok" or "Extract" and the application will move to the chosen location.

    • 3

Log in to the user account that you want to edit. Double-click the Windows XP Security Console icon to open the application. The options to edit the group policy settings for that user account will be displayed. Edit the account to your liking. For example, you can limit the ability to install programs on that account or restrict access to certain areas of the operating system. Repeat the process for each user account.
