A corner is an ideal location for a work area. You’re not interfering with traffic through the room and your view doesn’t lend itself to getting distracted. Despite this, triangular desks aren’t nearly as easy to find as rectangular ones. Fortunately, you can build a triangular desk yourself in an afternoon, plus a few hours for the paint to dry.
Things You'll Need
- 2 plywood sheets, ¾ inches by 30 inches by 30 inches
- power saw
- wood glue
- box of nails, ¾ inches long
- hammer or nailgun
- painter’s putty
- paint or wood stain
- paint brush
Preparing the Lumber
Cut the plywood sheets to the proper dimensions.
Cut one plywood sheet along the diagonal, creating two right triangles. Set one triangle aside. You won’t use it, but you might want to keep it in case of mistakes.
Sand all faces of your lumber until it’s smooth enough to avoid splinters.
Assembling the Desk
Set the two, 30-inch square pieces of plywood in an L-shape, the end of one square abutting the face of the other. Glue in place.
Reinforce with a line of eight evenly spaced nails. Allow to dry.
Lay the plywood triangle on top of the L. The outside edges of the lumber squares should be flush with the edges of the straight sides of the triangles. Glue in place.
Reinforce with a line of eight evenly spaced nails along each plywood square. Allow to dry.
Putty over the nail heads along all three lines of nails. Use the putty also to smooth over any cracks or dings in the lumber. Allow to dry.
Sand off any excess putty or wood burrs that occurred during construction.
Paint or stain your desk. Allow to dry.
Slide the desk into position in the corner.
Tips & Warnings
- Not all houses have perfectly level floors or straight corners. Check your cut triangle in the corner where you intend to use it, and shave off excess wood if you don't have a right angle. If your floor isn't straight, shim the legs with thin sheets of cardboard until your desk no longer wobbles.
