Homemade lotion is a more natural and often cheaper alternative to store-bought lotions. You have complete control over the ingredients and can choose not to use artificial colors or scents. A vanilla and brown sugar lotion is probably one of the simplest scented lotions to make. The aromatic ingredients, vanilla extract and brown sugar are readily available at any grocery store.
Things You'll Need
- 2 tbsp. beeswax
- 1/4 cup coconut oil
- 1/4 cup canola oil
- Microwave safe bowl
- 1/8 tsp. borax
- 1/2 cup distilled water
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
Combine 2 tbsp. beeswax, 1/4 cup canola oil and 1/4 cup coconut oil in a microwave safe bowl.
Put the bowl in the microwave and cook it at medium heat for 30 seconds. Remove it from the microwave, stir it and repeat the process until the wax and oil are melted and thoroughly mixed.
Combine 1/8 tsp. borax, 1/2 cup distilled water and 1/4 cup brown sugar in a saucepan. Put the pan on the stove at medium heat and stir it until the sugar and borax dissolves. Remove from the heat once ready.
Pour the water mixture into the oil mixture in a slow, steady stream while simultaneously combining the ingredients with a whisk.
Whisk the ingredients vigorously for 3 minutes to ensure they are thoroughly combined.
Add 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract to the mixture and whisk for an additional 30 seconds. Let the lotion cool and thicken for at least 1 hour before putting it in a jar or bottle.
