How to Find an Instant Messenger ID
While finding the Instant Messenger ID of someone you know can be very easy, finding the ID of someone you just met or may not have all the information for can require more effort. Sometimes even finding the ID of someone you know very well can be difficult if they have chosen not to link their Instant Messenger ID with their name or have not provided you with the ID themselves. In these situations, you have to rely on a few alternative sources of information.

Open your Instant Messenger program and select the "Add friend" or "Search" menu. Once the search section has opened up, type in the name of the contact you are searching for in the box marked "Name." Press the "Search" button to start the search for your contact using the Instant Messenger's search program. Choose your contact from the list of contacts that have been found by picking the contact that matches your contact's location, picture or other personal information.

Search and add your contact as a friend using Facebook or another social networking site if you are having trouble locating them using the Instant Messenger's search program. Once you have been added as a friend, you will be able to access your contact's personal information, such as address, phone number and often their Instant Messenger ID. This information will be under the "Contact Information" tab.

Use an Internet search engine to search for your contact's name along with the words "instant messenger." Depending on the distinctiveness of your contact's name, this method may allow you to find all the instances where his or her name was mentioned in conjunction with Instant Messages. You can also search simply for a name, and work your way through the various websites that appear, a method that is more tedious for common names and extremely quick for unusual ones.

Of course, the most efficient way to find an Instant Messenger ID for someone is to contact them directly and ask their Instant Messenger ID.
Some Instant Messenger programs will not allow you to chat with users of other Instant Messenger programs, but there are quite a few programs that allow users of all email types and messenger programs to communicate easily across different messaging platforms.
Be careful about posting your Instant Messenger ID in public places online if you are hesitant for strangers to be able to communicate with you and add you as a contact.
