Instructions

  1. General Troubleshooting

    • 1

Spray between the keys of the laptop using short, quick bursts from a can of compressed air to clear out any dust and crumbs if the keys aren't responding. Debris under the keys may cause them to malfunction; clearing this debris allows them to depress completely and perform properly.

    • 2

Turn off the Caps Lock, Number Lock and Scroll Lock functions on your keyboard by pressing their respective keys. These features will affect the way your keyboard types. For instance, the Caps Lock key will capitalize any letters you type while the Number Lock key enables the numeric functionality of your laptop's keys.

    • 3

Disable accessibility features such as Sticky Keys, Toggle Keys and Filter Keys through the Windows Vista Ease of Access Center. Open the Start menu, open the Control Panel, select "Ease of Access," the "Ease of Access Center" and the option to "Make the keyboard easier to use." Click the box for each option so its unchecked to disable the accessibility features. In some versions of Vista the Ease of Access Center will come up automatically.

    Update the Driver

    • 4

      Open the Start menu.

    • 5

Choose to open the Control Panel.

    • 6

Type "Keyboard" into the search and click its icon when it appears.

    • 7

      Select the "Hardware" tab.

    • 8

      Click "Properties."

    • 9

      Select the "Driver" tab.

    • 10

Select the "Update Driver" option and follow the on-screen instructions to update your computer's keyboard driver. Windows Vista will search online for updates to your keyboard's driver and install them if any are found.
