How to Update ESET Smart Security

Regardless of how potent a security program is, it will not be able to protect a computer from threats it does not recognize. Regularly updating the virus database of an antivirus, anti-spyware or any other security program is important, because having the most current database will enable the program to detect and eliminate newer and more complex threats. ESET Smart Security is a comprehensive security suite, combining antivirus, anti-spyware, firewall and anti-spam capabilities in one all-encompassing program. You will have to manually update your ESET Smart Security program if it is not scheduled to run automatic updates by default.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the ESET Smart Security program icon on the System Tray---the bottom right edge of the desktop screen, next to the system clock---and click once to open the program's main window. The ESET System Security icon is a small blue circle inside a diagonal shape. This will open the program's home interface; the main menu will appear on a panel to the left of the screen.

    • 2

Click on "Protection Status" on the program's main menu to check your subscription status. You will not be able to update the program if it is expired. The right side of the screen will display a summary of program status, including activated components, database version and license validity. Make sure your product is valid, or renew your license before updating.

    • 3

Click the third option on the main menu, titled "Update." The right panel on the screen will display program status, including date, time and version of the last successful update of the virus signature database. If the screen is headlined "Virus signature database is up to date," your program already has the most current update installed.

    • 4

Click "Update virus signature database." This command will prompt ESET Smart Security to connect to the Internet and download the latest database to your software. If you receive an error message indicating that you have given an incorrect username and password, your program will not be able to download the necessary updates. Click "Cancel" and then go to "Username and Password Setup."

    • 5

Check your username and password from the "License Details" window that opens. Copy both "Username" and "Password" from the details window and paste them on appropriate fields. Click "OK" and try updating again by clicking "Update virus signature database." If you have a valid license, and if your username and password fields are filled correctly, the program will download and apply the latest virus signature database. Click the confirmation message when prompted at the end of the process.

    • 6

Click "Update" and check the date and time specified on "Last successful update," or check the database version from the same window, to check whether the update was successful.
