Connect the power by plugging the modem's power cord into an electrical outlet. To prevent damage from electrical surges, connect the power cord to a surge protector that is plugged into an outlet. Attach the other end of the power cord to the modem, and wait for the "Power" and "Modem" lights to light up and remain on. Few modems require a manual on-switch, but if your modem has a switch, turn it on and wait for the modem to power up.

If using an ethernet cable, connect one end of the ethernet cable to the ethernet port on your computer, and the other to the corresponding ethernet port on the modem. If using a USB cable, place the USB driver disk in the computer's disk drive, select the option to allow Windows to automatically detect the drivers, and connect the USB cable to the modem and computer's USB ports.
