How to Remap a Mouse Button to Print the Screen

Mice with more than two buttons work well with custom keystroke assignments.

While some older mouse software excludes the feature, most newer mouse drivers allow you to change the assignment of the mouse buttons to perform a variety of different tasks. Using your operating system's built-in screen printing keyboard shortcuts, you can print the screen with a single click.

Instructions

    • 1

Download mouse drivers or software. If you are using the default drivers that came with your system, you may not be able to remap mouse buttons. You can download Microsoft's Intellipoint drivers for Windows or Mac for use with Microsoft mice and some others, or download drivers from your mouse manufacturer's website. Other, non-driver software such as USB Overdrive or SteerMouse will also work with OSX.

    • 2

Install the software to your hard drive. Some driver software requires your computer to restart before operating correctly.

    • 3

Open the software. You can access Windows mouse drivers from the "Mouse" icon in the Control Panel. Depending on the software, you may need to answer questions about your mouse hardware, or select it from a list.

    • 4

Select the Mouse button you wish to use to print the screen.

    • 5

Select the keyboard mapping option from the list, labeled "Keystroke," "Keyboard Shortcut," or similar.

    • 6

In the keystroke entry box, enter the keystroke you wish to use. Windows uses "CTL + P" to Print physical documents, and the "PrintScreen" key to print to the clipboard. In OSX, use "Command +P" to access printers, and "Shift + Command + 3" to print to an image file (see References).

    • 7

Click "OK" or "Apply" to save your changes and close the window.

    • 8

Press the assigned mouse button to print the desired screen.
