Change iPod sync settings so you can manually add music to the device.

An iPod can be synced with the iTunes software two different ways. When the iPod automatically syncs with the program, you are required to sync every song already on the iPod with the device each time you add new music onto the device. Manually syncing the iPod with iTunes, however, lets you add individual files onto the iPod without having to worry about syncing audio and video files that you have already transferred onto the device.

Connect the iPod that you are syncing with the computer, via that iPod's USB cord.

    • 2

      Open iTunes.

    • 3

Click "iPod" or the name of the iPod found inside the left column of the iTunes software.

    • 4

Click the tab that is named "Summary" in the center of iTunes.

    • 5

Choose the "Manually manage music and videos" option located inside the center of iTunes by clicking that option's box.

    • 6

Click "Apply" at the bottom of the right iTunes column. You no longer have to sync every song when adding music to an iPod.

    • 7

Click on "Music" underneath "Library" inside the left column of the iTunes program.

    • 8

Hold down the "CTRL" key (the "Command" key for Mac computers), and click the music in the middle of iTunes that you're putting onto the iPod. The music clicked becomes highlighted.

    • 9

Drag the music you clicked on over to the "iPod" word or iPod name. The music is placed onto the iPod.
