How to Register My DJ Business

How to Register My DJ Business thumbnail
Owning a DJ business can be both lucrative and fun.

Owning and operating your own DJ business can be a lucrative and rewarding career. Disc jockeys supply music for everything from club nights and weddings to birthday parties and bat mitzvahs. The company setup is easy. All you need to get started is a computer, some music and a few loudspeakers. Of course, you will also need a business license to get the company off the ground and making music. With a small investment of your time you can have your DJ business registered with federal, state and local entities that govern business in your area.

Instructions

    • 1

Register for a federal Employer Identification Number with the United States Internal Revenue Service. You can apply for the EIN free of charge on the IRS website (see link under Resources). An EIN is required for tax purposes and is often required to obtain state and local licenses.

Apply for a state business license through the office of your state's secretary of state. You may call the secretary of state's office or review its website for additional details on requirements for a business license application. The business.gov website, which is part of the United States Small Business Administration, will also provide comprehensive information about the permits and licenses required for your state (see link under Resources and click through to your state).

Obtain a local business license through your city, town or county. Contact your local government directly or visit the business.gov website for information on local licensing requirements. Once these licenses are in place, you can open for business.
