How do I Store Children's DVDs?
Storing children's DVDs may seem like a difficult process, usually because children often pull out all of their movies at once, creating a large mess. However, it is easy to keep children's DVDs stored and safe with a sensible and efficient storage system understood by all family members and a few strict rules. With a practical storage method, the days of 20 or 30 mixed up DVDs are over. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Bookshelf or DVD shelf
- Cabinet with or without drawers
- Labels
- Cabinet lock (optional)
- Pencil
- Paper

1
Organize the children's DVDs that you have. If you are like many families, you have a large collection of DVDs ranging from educational to princess movies to favorite television shows. Place each type of DVD into a pile, such as all television shows in one pile and all princess movies in another. Note how many DVDs in each category you have. Write the number in each category on a piece of paper.
-
2
Assign a shelf, cabinet or drawer system for your DVD storage. Place each category of DVD on its own shelf, cabinet or drawer. Arrange the DVDs alphabetically. Do not stack the DVDs more than one row deep. If you do, this is just asking for a mess when the child wishes to watch a movie located in the back row. All the other movies in the front row will end up on the floor.

3
Create a category label for each type of DVD you own. If your children cannot read, use picture labels, such as a princess for princess movies and ABC letters for educational movies. Stick the labels to the front of the drawers or on the bottom of the shelf where the DVDs are located.
-
4
Write the number of DVDs in each category on the label as well. This way you can know at a glance if any of the DVDs are missing from the shelf. Do not allow children to get a new DVD from the shelf until the missing DVDs are found.

Tips & Warnings
Establish a one-in-one-out rule for children's DVDs. One problem that many families have is that children will get out multiple DVDs without replacing the DVDs that they previously removed from the shelf. This creates a massive pile of mismatched DVDs and cases that the parents must clean up to avoid a mess and the breakage of DVDs.
Consider placing a lock on the DVD storage cabinet. That way only the parents can access the movies, which makes it much easier to keep them organized and put away after use.

Fantastic ideas Brenda :) I have a 2 year old and already she has close to 100 dvds. My preferred option is to insert cds/dvds into clear plastic sleeves which can hold movie/title cover and disc. These can then be stored neatly in binders and out of reach from little hands. I use "Well Sorted Disc Storage Solutions" products to organise my daughter's discs and save space as they have a large range of coloured and cartoon character binders & wallets (perfect for the car). They also have a Personalised Binder range which incorporates children's designs and can be personalised with child's name. Makes for a unique gift too! All reasonably priced. Regards, Aleisha -
