Submitting a website to as many search engines as possible guarantees a greater possibility of people finding and visiting the site. Submitting a website is not difficult, but it can be confusing for the first-time webmaster. The two main methods for submission are using an aggregator that will submit to many sites at once and submitting to each search engine individually. Usually, the best plan is to use a combination of both of these methods.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a temporary email address or forwarder to use for submitting the website to the search engines. Although the major search sites, such as Google and Bing, are not of concern, the smaller sites and the aggregators are potential sources of spam.

    • 2

Submit the site to the larger search operators. Google and Bing make it easy for webmasters to submit their content. Look for the "About" link from their main pages. Follow the link to the page that allows submission of content. These larger sites generally want the site's address and nothing else. Indexing happens in as little as one day.

    • 3

Find a submission aggregator. A popular choice, as of August 2010, is AddMe.com. Their free submission services will submit a site to 20 different search providers. Aggregators such as AddMe.com usually ask for a good amount of contact information in exchange for their submission services. A temporary email address and otherwise vague contact information are recommended to avoid spam as much as possible.

    • 4

Apply for inclusion in more specialized searches and directories. Sites such as Yahoo! have an application process for free site inclusion in their directory. Not every site that applies gets included, but if you're successful, Yahoo! can drive significant traffic to your website.

Resubmit your site as needed. It is a good idea to resubmit your site to the smaller search engines that may not index new content frequently. This is especially true if you do not update your content on a regular basis.
