A 15-pin, or VGA, cable

If your Hewlett Packard computer monitor goes bad, or if it is just too small for your liking, you can take advantage of your television's capabilities and connect your computer to it. The process is similar to connecting to your monitor, except that the ports on the television might not always match up with the ports on your PC. If you need to change from one port to another, however, you can simply purchase an adapter. The method you use to connect your PC to your television will depend on the type of port you want to use on the television, 15-pin or HDMI.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

  1. 15-Pin Connector on the TV

    • 1

Connect one end of a 15-pin video cable, also called a VGA cable, to the corresponding port on the back of the television.

    • 2

Plug the other end of the 15-pin video cable to the 15-pin port on the back of your computer. If your HP model does not have a 15-pin port, attach the end of the cable to a DVI-to-15-pin adapter and plug the adapter into the back of the HP computer. The DVI port will have 24 square holes right next to a horizontal line.

    • 3

Turn on your television and your HP computer.

    • 4

Press the "Input" or "Source" button on your TV remote. The name of your desired source will differ depending on your TV model, but it should be "PC," "PC-IN" or "VGA." Scroll to that option and press "Enter" on the remote.

    HDMI Connector on the TV

    • 5

Plug one end of an HDMI cable into the HDMI port on the back of the television. If your television has more than one HDMI port, look for a number next to each one. Plug the cable into the port labeled "1."

    • 6

Insert the other end of the HDMI cable into the HDMI port on the video card in the back of your HP PC. If your HP does not have an HDMI port, plug the cable into a DVI-to-HDMI adapter, then plug the adapter into the DVI port on the back of the PC.

    • 7

Turn on both the TV and your HP computer.

    • 8

Press the "Source" or "Input" button on your TV remote. Scroll down the list of options until you see "HDMI" or "HDMI-1." Press "Enter" on this option to see your HP computer screen on your television.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you want to connect audio as well, run an audio cable from your computer's sound card to the audio port next to the port you used in the back of the television.
