How to Install VoIP

Talk with anyone around the globe after installing VoIP.

VoIP stands for "Voice over Internet Protocol" and refers to a technology that allows for voice transmissions to be delivered over the Internet. This has made it possible for people all around the world to pick up a telephone and call anyone, anywhere, just like they were in the same city. If you have purchased a VoIP system, you will have to install it by connecting the IAD, or integrated access device, to your Internet and computer.

Things You'll Need

• 2 Ethernet cables
• Telephone wire

Instructions

1. Unplug your router from its power outlet and disconnect it from your computer. Also turn off your computer.

2. Connect your IAD to the router with an Ethernet cable. Insert the cable into the port labeled "WAN" on the IAD and into one of the ports on the router that has little numbers right above it.

3. Plug your computer into the router with another Ethernet cable. Insert the cable into the Ethernet port on the computer and into another one of the numbered ports on the router.

4. Connect the router to a power outlet. Wait for several minutes until the router is fully started up.

5. Turn the computer on once the router is running. After the computer starts up, plug the IAD's power cord into an outlet.

6. Plug a phone wire into the port labeled "Phone" or "Line 1" on the IAD. Connect the other end of the phone wire to a phone.

7. Connect the phone to a power outlet if it is a cordless set.

Tips & Warnings

• You can disconnect your VoIP system and take it with you when you travel, as long as you have an Internet connection at your destination.

• Do not set up your VoIP with children around; there will be a lot of wires around, and they could hurt themselves or pull down your equipment.
