How to Locate the Mac Address on a Gateway Laptop

A Media Access Control (MAC) address is a code associated with a specific networking device that identifies the device and distinguishes from other devices. The MAC address of a networking device can be likened to a fingerprint; even two devices of the exact same model from the same manufacturer will have different MAC addresses. Gateway laptops run Windows based operating systems; Windows has a built in network information command that you can use to check your MAC addresses.

Instructions

    • 1

Click "Start," "Run," type "cmd" into the run text box and press the "Enter" key. For Windows Vista and 7 you can also type "cmd" into the search field and press "Enter."

    • 2

Type "ipconfig/all" into the command prompt that appears and then press "Enter." A list of networking information will appear.

    • 3

Scroll through the list of information, locate the device that you want to identify, and then look at the character string listed as "Physical Address." This is the MAC address for the device. MAC addresses typically come in 12 character strings where characters are grouped in pairs and separated by hyphens or colons such as: 00-F1-3B-78-FA-54.

Tips & Warnings

  • Each networking device installed in a computer will have a different MAC address. If your laptop has both a LAN card and a wireless network card, different physical addresses will be displayed for each device in the "ipconfig/all" information readout.
