How to Create an Online Chatting Website

Online chatting websites are a great way to gather people with a common interest in one place. They can also make a website interactive and community-driven, instead of static and driven by one person. The most difficult part of owning a chat room is the initial setup. The many options on the Internet may give you more flexibility, but can cause some confusion when first starting the website.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase web space and a domain name from a reputable company or register for free web space online. Buying space will give you more flexibility and power over your chat, and some companies even provide a chat client in your package. Your space should only cost a few dollars a month if you do decide to purchase.

    • 2

Customize your website, adding any other pages you wish to appear (such as an About page). Using HTML or an internal or external site builder, depending on your skill level, add color, text and pictures to your page. Decide where you want the chat box to appear.

    • 3

Find a chat client that fits your site. You have the option of Flash, Java, PHP and other coding options. If you have a free website, however, you may not be able to use PHP. Most of these services will provide you with the chat box filled with ads. If you bought space online, it will not have ads. In some cases, you can purchase a premium service without ads.

Sign up for that chat client. Most companies will allow you to customize the size, color and font of your chat box. If so, follow the steps through the sign-up process. At the end, the website will provide you with chat code. Copy this code.

    • 5

Navigate to your website files. Find the page you where you want the chat to reside. Open the HTML file and paste the chat code somewhere in between the <body> and </body> tags. Preview the page and make sure the chat is in the right place. If you want to move it, copy the whole code and place it in a different area, remembering to keep it between the <body> and </body> tags. Publish the page when you are satisfied.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be careful when choosing chat clients that they have no adware attached. Look for online reviews and support before deciding on one company.
