How to Update a Microsoft Firewall

How to Update a Microsoft Firewall thumbnail
The Windows Firewall blocks hackers from accessing information on your operating system.

Internet threats evolve frequently, and so must the tools that mitigate these threats. Microsoft's Windows Firewall shields your computer from hackers and other malware while it is connected to the Internet. Hackers create new techniques and develop new malware programs to get around current security definitions programmed into firewalls, so all software-based firewalls must stay updated on the latest approaches to compromising your security. Windows Firewall is native, or built into the operating system. If there is a published update to the firewall, it will be available through Microsoft's Windows Update service.

Instructions

    • 1

Click on "Start," then choose "All Programs" and click on "Windows Update" to open the dialog box. Alternatively, type "windows update" in the search box at the bottom of the "Start" menu, then press the "Enter" key.

    • 2

Click on "Check for Updates" in the left pane and wait for Windows to connect to Microsoft's update servers. When updates are found, the results will be returned to the computer, showing show up in the dialog box.

    • 3

Click on the sections labeled "Important," "Recommended," and "Optional" and look for updates related to Windows Firewall.

    • 4

Click a check mark in the box next to the Windows Firewall update to choose it, if it is not already marked. For example, Microsoft published and released a critical Windows Firewall update in December 2004 labeled "886185."

    • 5

Click the "Install" button and wait for the Windows Update service to download and complete the installation of the update to the Windows Firewall.

Tips & Warnings

  • If Windows Update service shows critical operating system updates in addition to Windows Firewall, include those as well to save time.

  • Avoid installing and turning on a second firewall if you prefer to use Windows Firewall, as the two might conflict and diminish security.
