How to Graph Functions With Software

How to Graph Functions With Software thumbnail
A variety of function graphing software can suit your needs.

A function is a mathematical term where an input to an equation (in other words, an X-value) produced a single output (a Y-value). Functions are used in algebra, calculus and a variety of other mathematical topics. Which tool you choose to graph functions will depend upon your needs and your budget. Hand-held graphing calculators are popular with college students, while mathematical computer software is generally geared to graduate students and the business world.

Click on the Holt McDougal link in References to navigate to a free graphing calculator interface. The software features a simple format where you can type in functions and graph them. It also has a "Trace" button where you can find outputs for any input values. This is a basic calculator with limited functions, but if all you want to do is to graph a function, it could be the ideal software for you.

Purchase a copy of Wolfram's Mathematica to graph functions. Mathematica was designed with a user-friendly interface that is suited to a wide range of users, from high school students to professional engineers. Mathematica has a built-in database of scientific and cultural data that you can use to graph functions instead of inputting your own data. For example, the database has hundreds of properties for countries, like GDP and population. Mathematica can be on the expensive side for the individual user; as of August 2010, a Home Edition of Mathematica costs $295 for a download.

Purchase a copy of Mapesoft's Maple. Maple is the standard in many colleges, universities and businesses for its capability to perform complex calculations and mathematical modeling. Maple has a command line interface, which means that you have to enter your commands in one at a time to communicate with the program. It is possible, however, to graph a function with a single line command. In general, Maple has the advantage over graphing calculators in that it can easily graph complex, multidimensional functions.

Tips & Warnings

  • When you graph a function, you should leave off the "Y=" portion of your equation when you type it into the software. For example, if you are graphing the function Y=5x, type "5x."
