How to Install a PCI Express Graphics Card

PCI slots have two connective slots, one that is separate from other.

A peripheral component interconnect (PCI) video card is a device that enhances the graphics of your personal computer. Video cards are an essential part of any computer used for gaming or graphic design. A PCI graphics card connects to the computer's motherboard via a PCI express slot. Installing a PCI express graphics card requires the use of a screwdriver and takes about fifteen minutes to complete.

• Nonmagnetic Phillips head screwdriver
• PCI graphics card

1. Turn off the computer and remove the power cord from the back of the computer's power supply.

2. Remove the side of the computer case by removing the screws that secure it to the computer.

3. Locate an empty PCI express slot on your motherboard by matching it to the plug-side of the PCI video card.

4. Gently slide the video card into the empty PCI express slot. Ensure that it is completely seated in the slot, or it won't work properly.

5. Secure the video card to the computer case using the screw that comes with the PCI card.

6. Replace the side of the computer case and the power cord.

Tips & Warnings

• When the computer boots back up, in most cases, it should automatically recognize the PCI video card.

• Install any software that comes with the card to configure advanced graphics.
